L’Illa Diagonal – Architecture, Commerce, and Urban Evolution in Barcelona
The L’Illa Diagonal shopping center is one of the most emblematic commercial and urban spaces in Barcelona. Located on Avinguda Diagonal, this complex stands out not only for its retail offerings but also for its architectural value, urban integration, and recent transformation towards a more sustainable and experiential model.
L’Illa Diagonal opened on December 2, 1993, becoming Barcelona’s first major urban shopping center. Its creation was part of the city’s modernization process following the 1992 Olympic Games.
The project emerged from a collaboration between the Sanahuja Group and the insurer Winterthur (currently AXA), as part of a plan to establish the upper Diagonal area as a new economic and business hub.
From the beginning, the complex was conceived as a multifunctional “superblock,” integrating retail, offices, a hotel, green spaces, and services.
The design was created by architects Rafael Moneo and Manuel de Solà-Morales, who proposed an innovative concept: a long, horizontal building parallel to the avenue, known as a “lying skyscraper.”
The project won the FAD Architecture Award in 1994, establishing it as an urban benchmark.
Today, L’Illa Diagonal hosts over 170 stores and around 35,000 m² of retail space, combining fashion, technology, home goods, and services.
It also features the gastronomic space El Rebost, along with a diverse dining offer including brunch, Mediterranean cuisine, healthy options, and premium coffee shops.
One of its most innovative elements is the Umbracle, an approximately 200-meter-long exterior structure conceived as a vegetated pergola.
Its purpose is to create an urban oasis that combines nature, architecture, and experience.
In recent years, the center has undergone a significant renovation with an investment of around €35 million, modernizing spaces and improving sustainability.
L’Illa Diagonal acts as a link between neighborhoods, integrates public and private spaces, and adapts to new retail trends, evolving toward an experience-based model.
Today, it represents an example of how shopping centers are transforming into hybrid spaces of leisure, nature, and community.
