A small guide to discovering one of the most magical corners of the Costa Brava

There are places that are not simply visited; they are lived.

And Cadaqués is one of them.

Hidden behind the rugged landscape of Cap de Creus, this whitewashed fishing village appears like a refuge untouched by time. A place where the Mediterranean becomes intimate, where white houses merge with stone, and where the light takes on an almost mystical quality.

Here, at the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Pyrenees meet the sea, one of our favourite romantic escapes begins.

The Journey Is Part of the Destination

Cadaqués is approximately 170 kilometres from Barcelona, around two and a half hours by car, depending on traffic and the time of year.

But here, the journey is not simply a transfer.

It is part of the experience.

Little by little, we leave Barcelona behind and the urban landscape begins to disappear.

Vineyards appear.

The plains of the Empordà open before us.

Small villages emerge along the road.

And eventually, the winding roads of Cap de Creus lead us towards somewhere completely different.

As we cross this landscape, something changes.

The pace becomes slower.

The Mediterranean takes on another presence.

And Cadaqués appears as though it had been waiting for us for centuries.

Cadaqués, Our Summer Escape

For many people from Barcelona, Cadaqués is part of their family memories.

It is the place of endless summers, houses by the sea, long lunches that seem never to end and shared silences while watching the horizon.

There are second homes here that hold decades of family stories.

Generations returning every summer.

Memories forever connected to a particular street, cove or sunset.

That is why, for many of us, returning to Cadaqués does not simply mean returning to a destination.

It means coming home.

The First Sunrise of the Peninsula

Cadaqués enjoys an extraordinary privilege.

Its position at the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula allows us to experience the arrival of daylight over the Mediterranean.

That is why we recommend getting up early.

When the village is still quiet and the first rays begin to illuminate the bay, Cadaqués reveals one of its most authentic faces.

We walk through its cobbled streets while the village slowly awakens.

It is easy to understand why Salvador Dalí found such a powerful source of inspiration here and oriented so much of his life towards this landscape.

The Old Town

A whitewashed maze above the Mediterranean

We allow ourselves to wander through the medieval maze of the old town.

White houses, small squares, stone stairways and the characteristic rastell — a traditional cobblestone paving pattern made from stones arranged in a herringbone style — create a unique atmosphere.

We walk along the historic Call, associated with Cadaqués’ former Jewish quarter, and discover a quieter, more intimate side of the village.

Here, every corner seems made to be photographed.

Every shadow holds a story.

And every climb reveals a new view of the Mediterranean.

The Church of Santa Maria

At the highest point of the village stands the Church of Santa Maria de Cadaqués.

From here, we enjoy one of the most breathtaking panoramas of the bay and the surrounding Empordà landscape.

The sea stretches towards the horizon while landmarks such as Es Cucurucuc and the Cala Nans lighthouse appear in the distance.

Inside, the church preserves a remarkable Baroque altarpiece and a historic organ.

The church also reflects the resilience and history of a community that has lived for centuries between the sea, the tramontana wind and its remote geographical setting.

Portlligat

The universe of Salvador Dalí

Just a few minutes from the centre lies Portlligat, one of the most extraordinary places around Cadaqués.

Its small bay, protected by rocky islets, creates the impression of a natural lake opening onto the Mediterranean.

This is where Salvador Dalí built his home and developed much of his creative universe.

We can visit the Salvador Dalí House-Museum, created from former fishermen’s cottages that the artist gradually transformed over the years.

The result is an organic and entirely personal architectural world.

Every room seems to answer a different need.

Every window is oriented towards a particular landscape.

And every object appears to form part of a carefully composed artistic vision.

The large white eggs crowning the house have become one of its most recognisable symbols.

At Portlligat, we begin to understand that for Dalí there was almost no boundary between reality, memory, dreams and artistic creation.

Cap de Creus

Where the land ends and the Mediterranean begins

Exploring the Cap de Creus Natural Park means discovering one of Catalonia’s most extraordinary geological landscapes.

The tramontana has sculpted these rocks over thousands of years.

Their forms seem constantly changing.

Some resemble animals.

Others appear almost abstract.

And some seem as though they were created by the imagination of an artist.

Here we understand even more clearly Dalí’s fascination with landscapes that seem to belong to the mind as much as to the natural world.

We can walk towards Cala Jugadora, discover Cala Culleró or continue towards Cala Nans.

These are places where time appears to stop.

Wild coves.

Landscapes of rock, wind and water.

Places where nature still retains an extraordinary feeling of freedom.

The Beaches of Cadaqués

The Mediterranean as an experience

The beaches of Cadaqués have a personality of their own.

Platja Gran is the social heart of the village.

From here, we watch the white houses descend towards the sea while small boats move gently across the bay.

But there are also more intimate corners.

Es Sortell, for example, offers one of the most beautiful perspectives of the village, particularly when the light changes the colour of the water and the white façades are reflected across the deep blue Mediterranean.

Here, swimming does not have to be hurried.

It can become a ritual.

Enter the water slowly.

Swim for a few minutes.

Come back out.

Sit beside the sea.

And simply contemplate.
