Park Güell by Antoni Gaudí.

Park Güell by Antoni Gaudí.

Located in the upper part of Barcelona, Park Güell is one of the city’s most admired icons, where Antoni Gaudí’s creativity merges with nature in a language of organic and curved forms. Barcelona, a city of more than 400 dragons evoking the legend of Saint George (Sant Jordi), treasures within this park its most photographed and celebrated dragon — a symbol of the fantasy and history that permeate every corner of the site.

The park was born as an ambitious urban development project promoted by Eusebi Güell, inspired by the English “garden city” model, with the intention of building around 60 houses surrounded by gardens, community services, a chapel, and a school. However, only two houses were constructed. In 1922, the City Council acquired the space and transformed it into a public park, thus preserving Gaudí’s masterpiece for everyone to enjoy.

At the highest point of the park, the Turó de les Tres Creus rises with three stone crosses evoking Calvary. This place reflects the architect’s spiritual vision, as he conceived architecture as a work in service of God. From the entrance of the park — the earthly realm — to the summit — the divine — Park Güell proposes a symbolic path of spiritual elevation, where every curve, column, and passageway connects us with nature as divine creation.

Gaudí deliberately avoided straight lines, as they do not exist in nature. Thus, columns resemble tree trunks, passageways imitate caves, and staircases recall flowing streams, forming a living and harmonious whole. The Plaza de la Naturaleza, with its serpentine bench covered in ceramic mosaics, invites rest and contemplation. Each fragment of color — green, blue, golden, or white — reflects the sunlight or preserves the shadows of past times, while the curve of the backrest embraces visitors like a delicate gesture of welcome.

The park is also a masterpiece of engineering. The upper square drains rainwater into a 1,200 m³ underground reservoir, releasing excess water through the mouth of the famous “dragon.” The Camino del Rosario, with its 59 stone spheres evoking the beads of a rosary, adds subtle yet profound religious symbolism, inviting reflection.

Upon reaching the great esplanade, the senses awaken: the breeze caresses the face, the distant murmur of the city blends with birdsong, and the pine trees surrounding the park whisper with the wind. From there, Barcelona unfolds like a living mosaic, with Tibidabo and its temple on one side, and the Mediterranean Sea shining in the distance. It is a moment when time seems to stand still, and the visitor understands why Gaudí conceived this place as a meeting point between human beings, architecture, and nature.

At sunset, the golden light transforms the mosaics into a mesmerizing spectacle. The Plaza de la Naturaleza becomes a theater where the beauty of the world is the stage, and the spectator is part of it — captivated by the harmony, color, and spirituality that Gaudí expressed in every detail.

Park Güell is not just a park; it is a sensory experience, a journey of the heart toward contemplation and inspiration, where every curve, stone, and color reminds us that nature and art can speak a universal language.
