Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – Barcelona, from the Foot of Christ the King.

A Unique Combination of History, Architecture and Spirituality at the Summit of Tibidabo
At the summit of Tibidabo, overlooking the city of Barcelona, stands the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a monument that brings together history, architecture and spirituality in an exceptional setting. Situated 575 metres above sea level, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea, while its imposing structure invites admiration, contemplation and reflection.
The temple’s history began in 1886, when a committee of Catholic gentlemen acquired the land after learning of plans to build a Protestant temple and a hotel-casino at the summit of Tibidabo. The land was subsequently entrusted to Saint John Bosco, founder of the Salesians, who promoted the construction of a Neo-Gothic chapel that would become the starting point for the present-day temple.
Construction of the Expiatory Temple began in 1902 under the direction of Enric Sagnier, one of the most prominent architects of his time. Following his death in 1931, his son, Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal, continued the work until its completion in 1961. The project spanned almost six decades due to its architectural complexity, the Spanish Civil War and financial difficulties.
On the day the foundation stone was laid, the Bishop of Barcelona, Salvador Casañas i Pagès, described the temple as “the new Montmartre of Barcelona”, referring to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris. The Tibidabo temple pays subtle homage to its Parisian counterpart while developing its own distinctive Catalan-inspired style and incorporating locally sourced materials.
Architecture: A Temple with Two Levels, Unique in Europe
The architectural complex stands out for its distinctive fusion of styles and its division into two main areas:
- Lower crypt: Characterised by dark stone, ornamental mosaics and a pronounced Neo-Byzantine influence.
- Upper church: Distinguished by its light-coloured stone, slender towers, stained-glass windows and Neo-Gothic pinnacles.
The temple is crowned by a 7.5-metre-high bronze statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, created by Josep Miret. With his arms outstretched above Barcelona, the sculpture symbolises faith and spiritual protection. The original statue, created by Frederic Marès, was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and replaced by the current one in 1961.
Beneath the esplanade lies the Chapel of Santa Maria del Tibidabo, whose origins date back to the 19th century. It bears witness to the earliest chapter in the mountain’s religious history. The temple’s façade features sculptures of Our Lady of Mercy, Saint George and Saint James, while the upper section incorporates a dome supported by eight columns, enhancing the grandeur of the entire complex.
Adjacent to the temple is Tibidabo Amusement Park, inaugurated in 1901. Its presence creates a striking contrast between the sanctuary’s spiritual solemnity and the park’s lively, recreational atmosphere.
The iconography of Christ reflects Syriac influences and portrays the heart as a symbol of ardent, unconditional love, inspired by the revelations of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. The current statue was blessed by Pope John XXIII in 1961, reinforcing its significance as a symbol of faith and spiritual protection for Barcelona and Spain.
The temple is recognised as a Property of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) and welcomes thousands of visitors and pilgrims every year. Admission to the temple, including the crypt and upper church, is free. Access to the panoramic terrace beneath Christ’s statue costs €3.50 and is available by lift.
