Introduction
The sculpture known as The Fish, also called the Golden Fish, is one of the most iconic works along Barcelona’s waterfront. It was designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry as part of the urban transformation for the 1992 Olympic Games. Located beside Port Olímpic, facing the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent to the Hotel Arts, the sculpture integrates harmoniously into the urban landscape and has become a symbol of Mediterranean tourism and contemporary architecture in the city.
Creation, Context, and Commission
The Fish was designed and installed in 1992 as part of the extensive urban redevelopment associated with the Olympic Games. It was commissioned by the Barcelona City Council to structure the new maritime façade and the Olympic Port, forming part of a broader initiative that transformed the city’s coastline into a landmark of modern urban planning.
Structure and Materials
Measuring 56 meters in length and 35 meters in height, the sculpture features an internal steel frame supporting an exterior of interwoven stainless steel strips with a golden finish. The design produces shifting reflections in sunlight, creating the illusion of movement and giving the sculpture a dynamic, organic quality. The combination of materials and form allows the work to interact with its maritime environment, appearing as a living organism emerging from the Mediterranean Sea.
Formal and Conceptual Inspiration
Gehry chose the fish shape as a metaphor for Mediterranean life and Barcelona’s historical relationship with the sea, fishing, and navigation. The sculpture conveys a sense of movement and lightness, reinforcing the connection between architecture, art, and nature. Gehry’s use of organic forms and sculptural language emphasizes visual and emotional impact rather than purely functional design.

Current Status
The Fish remains in its original location at Port Olímpic, visible from Barceloneta Beach and the city’s main coastal tourist areas. In recent years, discussions have emerged regarding its integration with contemporary urban development, yet it continues to serve as a prominent example of public architecture and coastal art in the Mediterranean.
Significance for Mediterranean and European Tourism
Frank Gehry’s Fish has become a must-see destination for visitors interested in public art, contemporary architecture, and Mediterranean culture. It is part of urban art and architectural routes that connect visitors to emblematic buildings, gastronomy, and cultural experiences along the promenade, solidifying its role as a key attraction in Barcelona and the broader Mediterranean region.
