Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – Barcelona, from the Foot of Christ the King.

At the summit of Tibidabo, overlooking the city of Barcelona, stands the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a monument that blends history, architecture, and spirituality in a single place. From its privileged position, 575 meters above sea level, it offers unparalleled panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean, while its imposing structure inspires admiration and reflection.

The history of the temple begins in 1886, when a Board of Catholic Gentlemen acquired the land upon learning of a possible construction of a Protestant temple and a hotel-casino atop Tibidabo. The land was later entrusted to Saint John Bosco, founder of the Salesians, who promoted the construction of a neo-Gothic chapel—the seed of today’s temple.

The Expiatory Temple project began in 1902 under the direction of Enric Sagnier, an influential architect and disciple of Antoni Gaudí. After his death in 1931, his son Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal completed the work in 1961. Construction lasted over six decades due to architectural complexity, the Spanish Civil War, and economic difficulties.

On the day of the laying of the first stone, the Bishop of Barcelona, Salvador Casañas i Pagès, described the temple as “the new Montmartre of Barcelona,” in reference to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris, which the Tibidabo subtly honors while developing its own Catalan style using local materials.

Architecture: a unique double-level temple in Europe

  • Lower crypt: dark stone, detailed mosaics, neo-Byzantine style.
  • Upper temple: light stone, slender towers, stained glass, and neo-Gothic pinnacles.

The temple is crowned by a 7.5-meter bronze statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Josep Miret, extending his arms over Barcelona as a symbol of protection and faith. The original statue by Frederic Marès was destroyed during the Civil War and replaced with the current one in 1961.

Beneath the esplanade lies the 19th-century Chapel of Santa Maria del Tibidabo, a witness to the summit’s religious origins. The façade features sculptures of the Virgin of Mercy, Saint George, and Saint James, while the upper level houses a dome supported by eight columns that enhance the grandeur of the complex.

Next to the temple is the Tibidabo Amusement Park, inaugurated in 1901, creating a unique contrast between solemnity and fun. The image of Christ follows Syriac iconography, with a heart inflamed with love according to the revelations of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. The statue was blessed by Pope John XXIII, consecrating it as spiritual protection for Barcelona and Spain.

The temple is a Cultural Heritage Site (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) and welcomes thousands of visitors and pilgrims each year. Entry to the temple (crypt and church) is free. Access to the panoramic terrace beneath the Christ statue costs €3.50 via elevator.
