Antoni Gaudí Experience

Antoni Gaudí Experience

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was a Catalan architect internationally recognized as one of the most prodigious experts in his field, and a leading exponent of Modernism. His exceptionally groundbreaking genius created a unique, personal, and incomparable architectural language, difficult to categorize.

Gaudí was born on June 25, 1852, in Reus according to some biographies, and in Riudoms according to others, a small town near Reus where his family spent summers.

He came from a family of coppersmiths, which allowed him to develop a special skill in understanding space and volume while helping his father and grandfather in the family workshop.

Gaudí’s ability to conceive spaces and transform materials flourished, eventually establishing him as a master of three-dimensional creation.

As a child, Gaudí had fragile health, which forced him to spend long periods resting at the Mas de Riudoms, observing nature for hours—a great teacher that he considered the supreme work of the Creator.

Through nature, Gaudí found the essence of architecture, following its patterns without copying, making his works beautiful, sustainable, and efficient.

As Gaudí himself said: “Originality consists in returning to the origin.”

In 1870, he moved to Barcelona to study architecture while working various jobs to pay for his education. Although an irregular student, he already showed signs of genius, earning opportunities to collaborate with some of his professors.

After graduating in 1878 from the School of Architecture, director Elies Rogent stated: “I do not know if we have given the title to a madman or a genius; time will tell.”

Gaudí then established his own office on Call Street in Barcelona, where he began creating the unmistakable architectural legacy now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage.

A pivotal friendship and mentorship began in 1878 with Eusebi Güell, an influential patron with a deep love for the arts, which allowed Gaudí to fully develop his artistic talents.

Gaudí produced numerous masterpieces: Torre Bellesguard, Park Güell, the restoration of Palma Cathedral, Colònia Güell Church, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera (Casa Milà), and finally, the Sagrada Família.

In his later years, Gaudí increasingly retreated from public life, dedicating himself to his mystical and religious pursuits. He passed away on June 10, 1926, after being hit by a tram while walking to the Sagrada Família.
