Sant Sebastià Tower — History and Current Status (2026).
The Sant Sebastià Tower is an iconic steel structure located in the Barceloneta district along Barcelona’s coastal line, and it constitutes one of the most significant elements of the city’s port landscape. It is a lattice‑style metal tower, approximately 78 meters tall, designed as the terminal station of the Port Cable Car (Transbordador Aeri del Port), a transport system that connects the port with the Montjuïc viewpoint.
Its origin dates back to the early 20th century, specifically to the project conceived for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, when engineer Carles Buïgas proposed an aerial transport link between the coastline and Montjuïc hill. During the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent decades, the installation experienced service interruptions, deterioration, and debates about potential demolition. However, thanks to successive rehabilitation initiatives — particularly a comprehensive restoration in the 1990s within the context of the Port Vell renovation — the tower regained its historical prominence and functional purpose. Since its reopening in the early 21st century, the cable car continues to operate, offering residents and visitors a panoramic journey of approximately 1.3 km that spans the old port of Barcelona to Montjuïc, providing unparalleled views of the city, the Mediterranean Sea, and the port infrastructure.
