Sant Pau Modernist Complex – History & Barcelona Experience.

Hospital de la Santa Cruz and the Sant Pau Modernist Complex · Barcelona
The Hospital de la Santa Cruz served for over five centuries as the main hospital in Barcelona and its surrounding area. Its work extended beyond healthcare, as it also hosted and educated orphaned children until the late 19th century, establishing itself as a symbol of charity and social assistance in the city.
Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, inspired by Europe’s most advanced hospitals and contemporary hygiene ideas, the hospital is organized in isolated pavilions surrounded by gardens and connected by underground tunnels. Initially, 48 buildings were planned, of which 27 were built. The layout features a square plan with diagonal axes forming a cross, reflecting Barcelona’s hospital history and medieval allegories.
The architect’s design emphasized light, ventilation, and decoration, making Sant Pau a unique global example of hospital architecture where open space and sunlight were integral to patient care.
After Domènech i Montaner’s death, his son Pere Domènech i Roura continued the project. The complex was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII on January 16, 1930, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1978, and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
The Modernist Complex combines mosaics, floral motifs, sculptures, and stained glass, transporting visitors to the medieval era and including mythical animals and tetramorphs. Saints such as Sant Jordi and Sant Martí appear in reliefs and mosaics, reflecting the institution’s mission to protect the sick and needy. The pavilions are oriented 45° relative to the Eixample streets to optimize sunlight and ventilation while maintaining symbolic alignment.
With growing healthcare demand and building deterioration, hospital activity moved in 2009 to a modern northern building. The rehabilitated pavilions now host international institutions, including the European Forestry Institute, Casa Àsia, the Global University Network for Innovation, and the United Nations University on Globalization, Culture, and Mobility.
Visitors can explore the Administration Pavilion, Sant Salvador Pavilion, and underground tunnels, immersing themselves in the history of medicine and architectural beauty of Sant Pau. Magic Dreams Barcelona offers guided tours that provide deep, emotional, and magical insights, including:
