Barcelona Olympic Port.

Barcelona Olympic Port.

History, Present and Experiences by the Mediterranean

The Vila Olímpica Marina, now known as Port Olímpic de Barcelona, is today one of Barcelona’s most emblematic maritime spaces: a place where recent history, contemporary architecture, nautical leisure and Mediterranean life come together.

Located between the urban coastline and the cultural dynamism of the city, the marina symbolises Barcelona’s modern transformation and its definitive reconnection with the sea.

Following the major renovation completed from 2024 onwards, Port Olímpic has acquired a new dimension. It is no longer simply a marina: it is also a public space open to the community, a new gastronomic destination, a centre for the blue economy, a hub for water sports and a magnificent waterfront promenade. The transformation has recovered more than 20,000 m² of public space, incorporating squares, viewpoints, green areas, promenades and new entrances connecting the marina with Vila Olímpica and the beaches.

A privileged location facing the Mediterranean

Port Olímpic is located in the Vila Olímpica del Poblenou neighbourhood, within the Sant Martí district, between Somorrostro Beach and Nova Icària Beach, and just a few minutes’ walk from Barceloneta.

Its strategic position directly connects the historic city centre with Barcelona’s modern coastline, making it a natural transition between maritime tradition and urban innovation.

From here, visitors can walk along the seafront towards Barceloneta, the city centre or, in the opposite direction, towards Poblenou and the northern beaches.

The marina is visually framed by two architectural icons that define Barcelona’s maritime skyline:

  • Hotel Arts Barcelona
  • Torre Mapfre

These two towers, built for the 1992 Olympic Games, represent the contemporary rebirth of Barcelona and form one of the city’s most recognisable images by the Mediterranean.

Further along the coastline stands another of Barcelona’s great visual landmarks: the W Barcelona, popularly known as the Hotel Vela, whose distinctive silhouette can be seen particularly well from the more open areas of the marina and from the promenade-viewpoint along the breakwater.

History: the Olympic legacy that changed Barcelona

Until the end of the twentieth century, Barcelona’s coastline was dominated by industrial and railway infrastructure that separated the city from the sea.

The hosting of the 1992 Olympic Games triggered a profound urban transformation.

Port Olímpic was conceived as a sports marina and accommodation area for athletes, later becoming one of the most significant urban projects of Barcelona’s new identity.

Its construction formed part of a much broader transformation of the coastline, recovering beaches, creating Vila Olímpica and establishing a new relationship between the city and the Mediterranean.

Among the major transformations were:

  • The recovery of kilometres of coastline and urban beaches
  • The creation of Vila Olímpica
  • The construction of Port Olímpic
  • Barcelona’s definitive opening towards the Mediterranean
  • The creation of new public spaces by the sea

Since then, the marina has progressively evolved into a social, tourist, nautical and gastronomic hub.

A marina with multiple functions

Today, Port Olímpic combines a wide range of functions:

  • Nautical marina with around 700 berths for vessels between 7 and 30 metres
  • Base for water sports and recreational sailing
  • Municipal Sailing Centre
  • New spaces for marine sports
  • Blue economy hub
  • Gastronomic destination
  • Public squares, viewpoints and promenades
  • Social, cultural and family-friendly space
  • Meeting point for residents and visitors

The marina’s new philosophy promotes a Barcelona that is more open, sustainable, accessible and connected to the sea, gradually moving away from the model based primarily on nightlife.

The former landscape of large terraces and nightlife venues around Moll de Mestral has been transformed into a public square of more than 8,000 m², with vegetation, seating areas and a large wooden pergola.

The new Balcó Gastronòmic: one of the major new attractions

One of the most important elements of the new Port Olímpic is the Balcó Gastronòmic, located at Moll de Gregal.

It is a new gastronomic destination designed to reconnect food, the city and the Mediterranean.

The project combines contemporary architecture, terraces, bright and transparent spaces, public squares and areas for relaxation, creating a much more open and welcoming environment in which to walk, dine or simply enjoy the sea.

The current offer brings together 10 gastronomic establishments, alongside complementary food and beverage concepts.

The new restaurants and gastronomic spaces

Among the current options are:

  • El Tribut – Mediterranean and Catalan fusion cuisine inspired by Antoni Gaudí, located on the upper level with exceptional views over the sea.
  • Eldelmar – Hermanos Torres – a culinary concept combining tradition and contemporary creativity.
  • Nuara – sea-and-fire cuisine featuring fish, seafood, meat and rice dishes prepared over the grill.
  • Kresala – specialising in fish and Basque-style grilling.
  • Superlocal – a restaurant focused on local produce and a kilometre-zero philosophy, using ingredients sourced from suppliers located within approximately 100 kilometres.
  • Casa Carmen – Mediterranean cuisine, sharing dishes and handmade pizzas, with a large terrace overlooking the sea.
  • El Cangrejo Loco – traditional seafood cuisine and one of the historic restaurants that remains part of the renewed marina.
  • Las Muns – gourmet empanadas prepared with natural ingredients.
  • Faborit – coffee, juices, salads and healthy food options, including takeaway choices.
  • Dolce Mare – ice cream, crêpes and coffee, an especially pleasant option for a break during a waterfront walk.

The overall concept is very different from the traditional restaurant scene of the former Port Olímpic: greater gastronomic diversity, more local produce, healthy options, terraces, family-friendly spaces and a much stronger connection with the sea.

Restaurants by the sea

Port Olímpic also retains long-established restaurants that form part of the gastronomic identity of Barcelona’s coastline, including:

  • El Cangrejo Loco – traditional seafood cuisine.
  • La Fonda del Port Olímpic – Mediterranean cuisine and local tradition.
  • La Barca del Salamanca – Mediterranean cuisine and specialities including fish and seafood.

These established venues now coexist with the new restaurants of the Balcó Gastronòmic, creating a much broader and more diverse gastronomic destination.

The result is a new culinary landscape where Mediterranean cuisine, fish and seafood, grilled dishes, local produce, healthy options, fusion cuisine, coffee, ice cream and informal dining all come together.

The Dic de Recer promenade and viewpoint: a walk into the sea

One of the great discoveries of the renewed Port Olímpic is the Dic de Recer promenade and viewpoint.

This walkway extends into the Mediterranean along the marina’s breakwater and offers one of the most remarkable places from which to experience Barcelona from the sea.

It is approximately 500 metres long, meaning that walking from the entrance to the end and back covers approximately 1 kilometre in total.

At a relaxed pace, the walk to the end takes around 7–10 minutes, while a complete return journey takes approximately 15–25 minutes, depending on walking speed and how often you stop to enjoy the views and take photographs.

It is particularly beautiful at sunrise, sunset and during the late afternoon, when the changing light creates reflections across the Mediterranean and transforms Barcelona’s skyline.

From the end of the breakwater, visitors can enjoy an exceptionally open view of the coastline, including:

  • W Barcelona, popularly known as the Hotel Vela
  • Barceloneta
  • Barcelona’s seafront
  • The open Mediterranean
  • Boats entering and leaving the marina
  • The city skyline
  • On clear days, a broad panorama of Barcelona’s coastline

It is important to distinguish this promenade from the ordinary seafront walkway: the Dic de Recer extends considerably farther out into the sea, creating the sensation of being surrounded by the Mediterranean.

Where does the promenade end, and do you have to walk back?

The Dic de Recer promenade ends at the outermost point of the breakwater, at the section that reaches furthest into the sea.

For this reason, if you are visiting the viewpoint itself, the usual route is to walk to the end and return along the same path.

It should not be considered a walkway that continues directly to the Hotel Vela. The W Barcelona is located further along the coastline, towards Barceloneta and the Moll de Sant Sebastià.

The great advantage of the Dic de Recer is precisely that it allows visitors to see the Hotel Vela from a privileged maritime perspective, after which the seafront promenade can be followed towards Barceloneta and the hotel.

How long does the walk take?

For a relaxed experience, we recommend allowing approximately:

30–45 minutes if you want to walk, stop at the viewpoints and take photographs.

For simply reaching the end and returning:

Approximately 20–25 minutes.

If you combine the walk with the Balcó Gastronòmic, lunch, dinner, coffee or a break by the sea:

1.5–2.5 hours is enough to enjoy the area without rushing.

The Dic de Recer is approximately 500 metres long, making the complete out-and-back route around 1 kilometre.

Is it open all the time?

Port Olímpic is accessible throughout the year, but not all areas and entrances operate under exactly the same hours.

The general marina opening hours are currently:

  • Summer: 6:00 a.m. – 1:00 a.m.
  • Winter: 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 a.m.

The Dic de Recer promenade and viewpoint has its own opening hours of 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Therefore, it is not open throughout the night.

This is particularly important when planning an evening visit: during summer, the promenade can be enjoyed until 10:00 p.m., although it is advisable to check the current opening hours before visiting if you intend to stay until late.

How to access the viewpoint

One of the major achievements of the Port Olímpic renovation has been improving the connection between the city and the marina.

The Dic de Recer can be accessed from the area around the Balcó Gastronòmic and Moll de Gregal, which is connected to the seafront promenade.

There is also a connection towards Nova Icària Beach, allowing visitors to incorporate the marina into a longer coastal walk.

The redevelopment has introduced stairs and lifts to improve circulation and accessibility.

By car

There are car parks close to the marina, with vehicle access via Moll de Mestral. The area is also directly connected to the coastal road network.

The renovation of Port Olímpic

Between 2020 and 2024, the marina underwent a major transformation based on:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • A reduction in nightlife-oriented activities
  • The promotion of the blue economy
  • City-sea integration
  • Improved accessibility
  • The creation of new public spaces
  • The promotion of gastronomy
  • The development of nautical activities

The transformation has recovered more than 20,000 m² of public space through squares, promenades, viewpoints, green areas and new access routes.

Blue economy and new activities

The renewed Port Olímpic is not limited to restaurants and tourism.

One of the main pillars of the transformation is the creation of a blue economy hub, designed to accommodate companies and organisations working in nautical activities, maritime services, innovation, research, technology and the circular economy.

The project also includes new business and activity spaces beneath the Dic de Recer and around Moll de Mestral, reinforcing the ambition to transform the marina into a reference point for the Mediterranean blue economy.

Water sports and nautical activities

The new marina retains its sporting and nautical identity.

The Municipal Sailing Centre has been renovated, while new spaces have been developed for water sports and maritime activities, with the aim of making sailing and sea-based activities accessible to a broader public.

The new philosophy is that the sea should not merely be a landscape, but also an active space for sport, learning and sustainable leisure.

Ecological regeneration and biodiversity

The marina also plays an increasingly important role in the marine ecosystem.

Among the environmental initiatives are the installation of 100 artificial reefs and 50 biotopes, designed to encourage the regeneration of the seabed and improve conditions for marine biodiversity.

These initiatives form part of a broader sustainability strategy intended to reconcile port activity with the protection of the marine environment.

It is an example of how the city not only looks towards the sea, but is also beginning to protect and regenerate it.

A new space for families, culture and the community

The renewed Port Olímpic has also expanded its cultural and family-oriented programme.

Moll de Mestral has become a flexible public space capable of hosting community activities, performances, workshops and cultural events.

The marina now includes family activities, workshops and free events throughout the year, as well as special programmes during major celebrations such as La Mercè and Christmas.

In this way, the port is no longer simply a place to pass through: it has become a living urban space throughout the year.

A complete Mediterranean experience

One of the best ways to discover the renewed Port Olímpic is to combine its different environments into one experience.

You can begin in Vila Olímpica, walk towards Moll de Mestral and continue to the Balcó Gastronòmic.

From there, you can descend towards the marina, admire the boats and continue towards the Dic de Recer.

The walk to the end of the breakwater offers one of the most distinctive perspectives of Barcelona’s coastline.

Afterwards, you can return towards the Balcó Gastronòmic for lunch, dinner, coffee, ice cream or simply a drink overlooking the sea.

Finally, you can continue along the seafront promenade towards Barceloneta, gradually discovering some of the most iconic images of Barcelona’s coastline and moving towards the W Barcelona, the Hotel Vela.

It is a route that allows you to experience Barcelona from several different perspectives: the city, architecture, gastronomy, sailing, beaches and the Mediterranean.

A particularly beautiful walk at sunset

Port Olímpic takes on a particularly captivating atmosphere in the late afternoon.

The light begins to reflect across the water, the Olympic towers change colour and the silhouette of the Hotel Vela appears against the Mediterranean horizon.

Walking along the Dic de Recer allows you to gradually leave the urban noise behind and experience Barcelona from a privileged position.

It is also one of the best times for photography, especially when the sunset begins to illuminate the skyline and the boats inside the marina.

A place where Barcelona can be felt

Port Olímpic represents a bright, open and emotional Barcelona, where contemporary architecture coexists with the sea breeze, sunset walks, sailing and Mediterranean gastronomy.

The renovation has transformed a space once associated mainly with nightlife into a much more diverse destination: a marina for sailing, walking, dining, observing, learning, practising sport, discovering marine biodiversity and enjoying the Mediterranean.

Today, Port Olímpic is one of the best places to understand Barcelona’s transformation and its relationship with the sea.

From the Olympic towers to the new Balcó Gastronòmic, from the waterfront terraces to the Dic de Recer viewpoint, every part of the marina tells a different chapter of this evolution.

And when the walk reaches the end of the breakwater, with the Mediterranean stretching ahead and the Hotel Vela rising on the horizon, it becomes particularly easy to understand the transformation that began with the 1992 Olympic Games: Barcelona turned back towards the sea and, more than three decades later, continues to create new ways of experiencing it.
